Working gas inventories see significant improvements this summer

(Wed, 18 Sep 2019) Working natural gas stocks in the Pacific region totaled 275 billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of September 6, 2019, according to the latest EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR). Pacific region working natural gas inventories are now just 28 Bcf lower than the five-year average and 26 Bcf higher than the year-ago level. The deficit to the five-year average reached a recent low of 19 Bcf, during the week ending August 23— the smallest in the region since May 5, 2017.

U.S. Biodiesel Plant Production Capacity

(Fri, 13 Sep 2019) The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its annual biodiesel production capacity report. The new report contains data for all operating U.S. biodiesel plants as of January 1, 2019.

Hourly Electric Grid Monitor

(Wed, 21 Aug 2019) EIA launched a beta release of its new Hourly Electric Grid Monitor, a redesigned and enhanced version of the existing U.S. Electric System Operating Data website. The data come from Form EIA-930, Hourly and Daily Balancing Authority Operations Report, which collects hourly electricity demand, forecast demand, net generation, and interchange data from the electricity balancing authorities that operate the electric grid in the Lower 48 states.

Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

(Wed, 21 Aug 2019) In 2008 EIA began collecting the commodity cost of all coal delivered to power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 50 megawatts or greater on the Form EIA-923, “Power Plant Operations Report.” Since EIA already collected delivered cost for the same shipments, a proxy for transportation cost is be calculated by subtracting one from the other.

OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet

(Tue, 20 Aug 2019) The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) earned almost $711 billion in net oil export revenue in 2018; however, EIA forecasts annual OPEC net oil export revenue will decline to $593 billion in 2019 and to $556 billion in 2020 as a result of decreasing production among a number of OPEC producers.

EIA’s new State Energy Portal includes New England energy data for state and regional comparisons

(Fri, 02 Aug 2019) EIA’s new State Energy Portal is a complementary tool for New England Dashboard users to access state-level information. The New England Dashboard focuses mostly on regional data. The new portal provides direct access to all state-level U.S. energy data with interactive, customizable views of more than 150 charts, tables, and maps. EIA integrated all data, analysis, maps, and rankings from the existing State Energy Profiles into the new portal.

Working natural gas stocks are more than half full in all regions as the deficit to the five-year average declines

(Thu, 18 Jul 2019) The U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) weekly estimates of natural gas storage capacity utilization published on July 12, 2019, exceed 50% in all regions for the second straight week. EIA updates estimates of underground storage capacity utilization by region each week in the Natural Gas Storage Dashboard. EIA created this metric to help analysts easily assess how full natural gas storage stocks are by region. The utilization estimate measures the weekly volume of working gas in a region compared with the amount of working gas capacity in a region.

Lower 48 natural gas injections into underground storage fields have been on a record-setting pace

(Tue, 02 Jul 2019) During the first 12 weeks of the 2019 summer refill season, which traditionally ranges from April 1 to October 31, net injections of working natural gas into underground storage fields in the Lower 48 states have set a record pace. Weekly net injections for the weeks ending April 5 through June 21, 2019 have totaled 1,171 billion cubic feet (Bcf), averaging about 98 Bcf per week. Cumulative net injections have exceeded the five-year average by 41%, reducing the current five-year average deficit by 314 Bcf.

EIA derives new estimate of New England nuclear plant utilization

(Mon, 24 Jun 2019) EIA adjusted its New England nuclear regional utilization rate on June 13, 2019, to account for the permanent closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (Pilgrim) on May 31, 2019. New England has two remaining operating nuclear power plants—the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant in New Hampshire (summer-rated plant capacity of 1,251.4 megawatts) and the Millstone Nuclear Power Station in Connecticut (summer-rated plant capacity of 2,073.1 megawatts).
